1) HIFEM Technology

HIFEM technology uses electromagnetic energy to stimulate muscle contractions in the area being treated. These contractions are called supramaximal contractions and they are much deeper and more effective than anything that can be achieved by exercise.  

With HIFEM, 20,000 muscle contractions are taking place within each 30 minute Emsculpt NEO treatment, which over a 4 treatment (1 month) protocol produces 80,000 deep, intense contractions!  At the gym, if you were to do 30 squats two times a week it would take 1,333 weeks to do 80,000 contractions (without the depth and intensity Emsculpt NEO creates)!  Muscle growth and strengthening from an Emsculpt NEO treatment comes in the form of both muscle cell hypertrophy (increased size) and hyperplasia (increased cells).   While this increase in muscle looks great aesthetically, our patients are usually even more excited about the increased strength they report both at the gym and in daily life. When the buttock area is treated, patients not only benefit from strengthened glutes, but they also benefit from a more rounded, toned, and lifted butt. 

In some areas such as the abs or thighs, specific settings on the device can allow muscles contractions while also simultaneously causing surrounding fat cells to release their fat stores in the form of free fatty acids (I.e., burns fat), producing a toned look.  

2) Radiofrequency

If desired, radiofrequency can be delivered simultaneously with the HIFEM muscle technology to destroy fat cells.  Radiofrequency heats fat cells to a temperature at which they undergo apoptosis, or cell death, without any harm to surrounding cells. When these fat cells are destroyed they are not replaced, leading to an overall significant fat reduction in the area being treated.  The sophisticated technology used in Emsculpt NEO makes the treatment very comfortable and safe.  Although Emsculpt NEO is not FDA cleared for skin tightening, we have also noticed that the radiofrequency energy also seems to tighten skin in areas being treated.  This skin tightening benefit makes sense as there are many aesthetic devices that use RF to produce collagen and elastic tissue.  We have many of these devices in our NYC office in addition to Emsculpt NEO as well. 

Emsculpt produces an average of 30% reduction in fat and 25% increase in muscle in treated areas.
